Overcoming the Challenges of Converting to Competency-Based Education

Competency-Based Education (CBE) is reshaping how teaching and learning are done, focusing on students’ mastery of specific skills rather than their ability to memorize information. Though it’s a more effective way to learn, transitioning to a CBE framework from traditional models can be a challenging endeavour.

Adapting a traditional course to CBE often requires a complete overhaul—reworking assignments, assessments, and even the way lessons are structured. This process can feel overwhelming and can be time-consuming as many educators are uncertain about how to redesign their courses to meet CBE requirements.

Competency Weaver makes the transition to CBE much easier. By simply uploading courses from an existing “traditional” program, educators can transform them into CBE-aligned ones. The platform generates tailored competencies, rubrics, and activities directly from the course material, significantly reducing the workload. Teachers can also easily create formative or summative assessments—whether case studies, role-playing scenarios, or interview-based tasks—with the flexibility to choose which criteria to evaluate. This process ensures that evaluations are fully aligned pedagogically with the course learning objectives, streamlining the conversion without the usual complications.

As Competency Weaver is structured using the CBE framework, it helps teachers step into the CBE mindset while actively working on their program.
